The Equal Esports Cup 2026 began its competitive journey with its first League of Legends Open Qualifier, giving women and non-binary players another route into one of Europe’s more distinctive esports competitions. The opening qualifier brought together teams looking to secure one of the limited places in the main tournament and immediately set the tone for the season.

The first qualifier was held across May 16 and 17, with two spots available for the teams that could survive the bracket. Eterna delivered the strongest run of the weekend, while Solary did enough to claim the second qualifying place. Both teams earned their way into the wider Equal Esports Cup field through performance rather than invitation.

Eterna Powers Through the First Open Qualifier

Eterna emerged as the standout team from the opening qualifier, completing its run without dropping a game and securing one of the two available places in the main competition. The result continued a strong period for the roster, which had already gained attention after winning LGC Rising in 2025. That earlier success gave Eterna a degree of momentum, but the Equal Esports Cup offered a different challenge, with a broader field and more established esports organizations waiting further down the line.

The unbeaten qualification run also gave Eterna an early reputation as one of the teams worth watching in the 2026 competition. Solary secured the second available place from the first Open Qualifier and joined Eterna in advancing to the main Equal Esports Cup competition. The French roster entered the event with the clear goal of reaching the larger tournament field and managed to do exactly that by navigating the qualifier successfully.

The result also showed the value of the open-entry format. Teams do not need to begin the competition with the profile or resources of a major esports organization. A strong enough run in the qualifying bracket can create a direct route into a tournament featuring more established names. For Solary, that meant moving from the qualifier stage into a much more visible competitive environment.

Equal Esports Cup Keeps Its Door Open to New Teams

The 2026 edition of the Equal Esports Cup continues to place open qualification at the center of its structure. Four teams are seeded into the main competition, while another four can earn their positions through two separate Open Qualifiers. The first qualifier took place on May 16 and 17, while the second followed on June 6 and 7.

The top two teams from each qualifier move forward, meaning half of the eventual field is decided through open competition. Eterna and Solary claimed the first two places, while Blue Otter and Barcząca Esports Babylon later secured the remaining two spots through the second qualifier. The structure creates space for new and lesser-known teams to enter the same competitive environment as established organizations.

The Equal Esports Cup is built around creating more competitive opportunities for women and non-binary League of Legends players. The tournament is backed by organizations including Riot Games, Deutsche Telekom, SK Gaming and the esports player foundation, with the broader aim of improving visibility, competition and long-term development for players who have historically had fewer routes into the professional scene.

The open qualifier format is an important part of that model because it lowers the barrier to entry. Players do not need to already belong to a major organization before taking part. They can form a roster, enter the qualifier and attempt to earn their place through results. That approach also gives teams and organizations another environment in which to identify emerging talent.

Established Organizations Await in the Main Competition

Qualification is only the first step, because the main Equal Esports Cup field includes organizations with deeper competitive experience. Teams such as SK Avarosa, Vitality Rising Bees and Mental Rush bring recognizable names, experienced players and stronger organizational backing into the tournament.

That creates a sharper test for teams arriving through the Open Qualifiers. Eterna and Solary may have earned their places through strong early performances, but they then have to prove they can compete against teams that already operate within more established esports structures. The tournament becomes a useful measure of how far an open-qualifier roster can go once the level of opposition increases.

Equal Esports Cup 2026 Builds Toward Gamescom

The competition continues well beyond the opening qualifier weekends. After the two Open Qualifiers, the tournament moves into its group-stage and playoff phases, with teams competing for a place in the grand final. The strongest sides eventually reach the final stage at Gamescom, giving the competition a much larger platform and a more visible finish.

Vitality Rising Bees ultimately won the Equal Esports Cup 2026 after defeating Mental Rush 2-0 in the grand final at Gamescom on August 29. The tournament also featured prize money for the leading teams, with €5,000 going to first place, €2,500 to second, €1,750 to third and €750 to fourth. For Eterna and Solary, though, the journey began much earlier, with qualification earned during that first Open Qualifier in May.
