State of the Meta

One of the least favoured maps in competitive, Olympus, underwent a rework to improve its combat flow during matches. After being announced for the ALGS 2026 championship map pool, some fans were curious to know what the players thought about Respawn Entertainment’s approach to maps
When asked whether he preferred new or remade maps, Hakis said: “I think the map rotation could be made more fun, as we have already played many of these maps since the start of the game. What would be more fun for me personally is queueing into ranked and getting a random map each time, just to mix things up.”
The Season 27 update also brought with it improvements to in-game movement, an essential component many esports players strive to master. The popular tech mantle boosting saw several changes to make it more accessible to casual players.
Discussing their favourite tech to use was, Effect said: “I think the most important one honestly, is wall jump and wall bounce, it can save your life sometimes. Super-glide isn’t too useful for me and can get you killed, I feel, better strafing left and right.”
Are Character Bans Good for Esports?
Several metas have come and gone over Apex Legends’ lifespan, with common staples such as Gibraltar proving viable time and again, whilst more niche picks like Seer briefly take the spotlight. This has extended to the ALGS scene as well, where a team’s composition has often made the difference between victory and defeat.
To keep things fresh in the esports scene, Respawn Entertainment introduced character bans for ALGS Year 5, and fans were curious to know if this has benefited the scene.
Via a question discussing if he preferred character bans or metas, Hakis said: “Definitely character bans, it’s so much more fun playing the game overall like this. I do think it could be improved on. Sometimes, you are still stuck on certain characters.
“Having it maybe accumulate over time and stacking up from the games going forward would be amazing.”
Alliance on the Apex Legends Esports Scene

In a scene where teams are cycling through new players every season, Alliance has stood out as one of the few organisations to retain some of its players for several years. Team captain Hakis has been with the organisation since 2020, Effect joined back in 2022, and Unlucky joined as its latest addition in February 2024.
Highlighting the importance of sticking together as a team, Hakis replied: “If you keep swapping the players you’re always going to be changing the problem and working on different things instead of figuring them out from the start.
“There are two sides to the coin. It’s very good to stick together to be able to hash out problems, but metas do change, and the roles of players do change, so there are definitely ups and downs for both.”
Is Europe Falling Behind?
The ALGS scene takes place across several regions, including the Americas, EMEA, APAC North and APAC South. With some of the strongest teams across the world set to compete at the ALGS Championship, players were curious to know who Alliance considered to be among the best.
When asked to rank some of their top players, Gen.G’s Apex Legends roster from APAC South was commonly brought up. During the Split 2 Pro League, Gen.G’s Papangkorn ‘ASIAZXD‘ Pattarawonghan broke the all-time record for most kills in a series. His teammate Jirayut ‘Z1CKKY” Apiwongngam achieved a new assist record.
Combined with Alliance’s dominant performance in EMEA Split 2 Pro League, many fans have begun to question the strength of Europe and its chances of success against its international rivals.
“I would personally say EU has been struggling a lot with quality,” Unlucky stated. “I think it would be better for organisations to require more hours in the game, which would help scrim quality.”
Hakis would add to his teammates’ points by suggesting that scheduling and time commitments may be a factor in why some of Europe’s players are falling behind.
